John H. Shary Elementary was honored to receive a Top Reader Award at the Festival of International Books and Arts (FESTIBA) on Friday, March 3rd.   The event was celebrated at the Edinburg City Hall Courtyard where Shary Elementary was one of the top four recognized for their Top Readers.  

The Community Day event hosted authors and artists that gave the community the chance to participate in various activities including arts and crafts and meeting some of the authors.  Shary Elementary was presented with a plaque by Dr. Dahlia Guerra of UTRGV and former President of the South Texas Literacy Coalition along with Dr. Ida Acuña-Garza, Executive Director of the South Texas Literacy Coalition presented the school.   

Author Duncan Tonatiuh, Winner of the Pura Belpre Award, presented our school with a signed autograph of his book The Princess and The Warrior.   We are very honored and proud of all of our student’s success and achievement in reading.

On Friday, March 3, Harry Shimotsu Elementary was honored by receiving a Top Reader award at the Festival of International Books and Arts (FESTIBA) in Edinburg. Shimotsu Elementary was one of four schools recognized that evening for emphasizing reading. Anthony Limón, Principal, and Zulema Bewley, Librarian, attended the event along with top readers from grades 1 – 6.  Dr. Dahlia Guerra of UTRGV and former President of the South Texas Literacy Coalition along with Dr. Ida Acuña-Garza, Executive Director of the South Texas Literacy Coalition presented the school with a beautiful plaque. Dr. Steven Schneider, professor at UTRGV, congratulated the students for their reading accomplishments. 

Author Steven Weinberg surprised the group by gifting the school a copy of his picture book You Must Be This Tall which he later autographed.  Each top reader was honored with a FESTIBA t-shirt. Since this was FESTIBA’s Community Day, attendees and their families were able to enjoy the many booths with authors, arts and crafts, music, and food. Mr. Limón commented, “We are very proud of our students and grateful to the organizers of FESTIBA for this tremendous honor. We also want to thank the parents for supporting their children’s education.”
