Sharyland ISD in partnership with The Uniting Neighbors in Drug Abuse Defense Coalition (UNIDAD), a program of Behavioral Health Solutions of South Texas, are hosting their second “Straight Talk for Parents” Drug and Alcohol Intervention Summit.

The Summit will take place on Saturday, March 3rd from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Sharyland North Junior High located at 5100 Dove Avenue in McAllen, TX.

A Free Kids Club will be available and a lite breakfast will be provided.  Both organizations are coming together to address dangers that parents and youth in our community need to be made aware of, such as current drug trends, misuse and abuse of prescription drugs, and social media threats.

The purpose of the “Straight Talk for Parents” summit is to raise awareness and educate parents, while discussing current trends related to alcohol and drug use, and come up with solutions that will help our community be ready to address the challenges that come with alcohol and drug use and abuse among adolescents and adults.

The Summit will provide information on ways to prevent prescription drug misuse, tips for proper safeguarding, and ways to properly dispose of medication; unfortunately, prescription medication misuse/abuse continues to be on the rise among adolescents and young adults in the United States and it continues to be popular in our area. The American Society of Addiction Medicine reports that drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the US, with 47,055 lethal drug overdoses in 2014. (PRC 11, Regional Needs Assessment).

The summit will also include a session on social media awareness, which will focus on how to keep social media safe for youth; as in many cases it can be a potential door to dangerous activity. This year, the summit will address two new topics based on request which will be marijuana social norms and consequences; in addition, experts participating at the summit will also discuss recovery, resources available, and the role of support for everyone involved.
